Signs Your Child May Need Braces

Carder Family 2012 (55 of 70)

Most parents expect orthodontic treatment to start when their child is a teenager with a full set of permanent teeth. But the truth is, meaningful orthodontic care often begins much earlier than that.

At Avelle Orthodontics in Gilbert, AZ, we don’t believe in waiting until small issues become big ones. Instead, we encourage families to think of orthodontics as something proactive rather than reactive. The goal isn’t to rush kids into treatment. It’s to understand what’s happening now so you can make confident decisions later.

What early signs should you look for?

Some signs that your child may benefit from an orthodontic evaluation are obvious. Others are much more subtle.

You might notice early crowding, where teeth seem to be running out of space as they come in. Maybe your child struggles with biting or chewing certain foods, or you’ve seen them favor one side of their mouth. Thumb sucking past toddler years can also influence jaw development and tooth positioning over time.

You may also observe teeth that erupt very early or come in later than expected, or a bite that looks slightly “off” when your child smiles or closes their mouth. None of these automatically mean braces are necessary, but they are helpful clues that an expert set of eyes could be beneficial.

Why age 7 is an important milestone

Around age seven, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, giving orthodontists a clear window into how their smile is developing.

Scheduling an exam at this stage doesn’t mean your child will leave with braces that day. In many cases, we simply monitor growth and development over time. What this early visit does provide is clarity. You’ll leave knowing what to watch for, what’s normal, and what might need attention down the road.

For many families, that peace of mind is just as valuable as treatment itself.

It’s about guidance, not pressure

We know that the idea of orthodontic care can feel overwhelming, especially when your child is still young. That’s why we take a gentle, educational approach. We’ll walk you through what we see, explain your options in plain language, and help you feel confident in whatever path you choose.

If something looks like it may need intervention later, we’ll talk through timing, goals, and what treatment could look like when the moment is right. If everything is developing well, we’ll celebrate that with you and stay connected as your child grows.
