Many parents assume orthodontic visits start when braces are needed. In reality, the first visit often comes much earlier and for a very different reason.
At Avelle Orthodontics, we typically recommend a first orthodontic exam around age 7. Not because treatment is expected, but because this is the stage when we can begin understanding how a child’s smile is developing.

What an Early Orthodontic Exam Tells Us
By age 7, children usually have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. This allows orthodontists to evaluate growth patterns that aren’t visible earlier and may not be obvious to parents.
An early exam helps us assess:
- How the jaws are growing and aligning
- Whether there is enough space for permanent teeth
- How the bite is forming as teeth come in
- Developmental trends that may influence future treatment timing
This visit gives us a baseline, which is incredibly helpful as your child continues to grow.
Why Early Exams Don’t Mean Early Treatment
One of the most important things parents should know is that an early orthodontic visit does not automatically lead to braces or appliances.
In many cases, the best plan is simply to monitor growth over time. Teeth and jaws change quickly during childhood, and not every concern needs immediate action. Early exams allow us to watch development carefully and step in only if and when it truly makes sense.
Our role is to guide, not rush.
Monitoring Growth Can Prevent Unnecessary Treatment
Without early guidance, some families don’t see an orthodontist until all permanent teeth are in. At that point, certain issues may be harder to address or may require more involved treatment.
An early exam allows us to:
- Identify concerns early without acting prematurely
- Time treatment for maximum effectiveness
- Avoid unnecessary or overly aggressive care
- Help families plan ahead with fewer surprises
This measured approach supports better outcomes and a smoother experience overall.

A Focus on Trust and Transparency
Parents trust us with their child’s care, and we take that responsibility seriously. We believe orthodontic recommendations should always be based on what benefits the patient, not on age or assumptions.
During your child’s first visit, we’ll explain what we see, answer your questions, and outline what—if anything—should happen next. If the answer is simply “let’s keep an eye on things,” that’s exactly what we’ll say.
