Braces Care Tips: How to Keep Your Teeth Clean During Treatment

Isaac Vierra

Getting braces is an exciting step toward a healthier, more confident smile. But once treatment begins, keeping your teeth clean becomes even more important. Brackets and wires create extra places for food and plaque to collect, which means your daily oral hygiene routine may need a few adjustments.

The good news? With the right habits, it’s completely possible to keep your teeth healthy and your orthodontic treatment on track.

Brush After Every Meal

One of the best things you can do while wearing braces is brush after every meal whenever possible. Food particles can easily become trapped around brackets and wires, increasing the risk of plaque buildup, cavities, and staining.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, and spend extra time cleaning around each bracket. Be sure to angle the brush above and below the brackets so you’re cleaning every surface of the tooth.

Don’t Skip Flossing

Flossing with braces can take a little more time, but it’s worth the effort. Plaque and food debris often collect between teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach.

Many patients find floss threaders, orthodontic flossers, or water flossers make the process much easier. During your visits, our team is always happy to recommend products and demonstrate techniques that work well with braces.

Use Helpful Tools

A few simple tools can make keeping your braces clean much easier, including:

  • Interdental brushes for cleaning around brackets
  • Water flossers to help remove debris
  • Fluoride toothpaste to strengthen enamel
  • Fluoride mouthwash for additional cavity protection

These small additions to your routine can make a big difference throughout treatment.

Watch What You Eat

Certain foods are more likely to damage braces or become stuck around brackets. It’s best to avoid sticky candies, chewing gum, popcorn, hard nuts, ice, and other hard or chewy foods.

Instead, choose softer foods that are easier on your braces while still maintaining a balanced, healthy diet.

Keep Up With Regular Dental Cleanings

Even with excellent brushing and flossing, professional dental cleanings remain an important part of maintaining your oral health during orthodontic treatment. Continue seeing your general dentist for routine cleanings and exams while you’re wearing braces.

Your orthodontist and dentist work together to help ensure your teeth stay healthy throughout your smile journey.
