Early Orthodontic Treatment: Benefits of Starting Before the Teen Years

Carder Family 2012 (55 of 70)

Many parents assume orthodontic treatment doesn’t begin until the teenage years. While that’s true for many patients, some children benefit from being evaluated much earlier.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll need braces right away, but it does allow orthodontists to identify developing issues while a child’s mouth and jaw are still growing.

Early evaluation can help create the best treatment plan at the right time.

Why Age Seven?

By age seven, children typically have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This gives orthodontists an opportunity to evaluate how the jaw is developing, how permanent teeth are erupting, and whether there are signs of future bite or alignment problems.

Many children won’t need immediate treatment. Instead, we’ll simply monitor their growth and determine the ideal time to begin orthodontic care.

Problems Early Treatment Can Help Address

Early orthodontic treatment may be recommended for children experiencing:

  • Crossbites
  • Underbites or severe overbites
  • Crowded teeth
  • Significant spacing issues
  • Jaw growth concerns
  • Teeth that are erupting in the wrong position
  • Harmful oral habits such as prolonged thumb sucking
  • Airway issues

Addressing these concerns while a child is still growing can often simplify future treatment and help support healthy jaw development.

Not Every Child Needs Early Treatment

One of the biggest misconceptions about early orthodontics is that every child will need braces in elementary school. In reality, many young patients simply benefit from regular monitoring until the timing is right.

At Avelle Orthodontics, we only recommend treatment when it’s truly beneficial. If monitoring is the best option, we’ll continue to track your child’s growth and let you know when the time is right to begin.

A Personalized Approach

Every child’s smile develops differently. That’s why every orthodontic treatment plan should be personalized.

Using advanced digital imaging, including CBCT technology when appropriate, our team can evaluate your child’s teeth, jaw, and facial development with exceptional detail. This allows us to make informed recommendations and plan treatment based on your child’s unique needs.

Give Your Child’s Smile the Best Start

An early orthodontic evaluation doesn’t always lead to immediate treatment, but it can provide valuable peace of mind and help prevent more complex issues down the road.

If your child is around age seven or you’ve noticed concerns about their bite or tooth alignment, schedule a consultation with Avelle Orthodontics. We’re here to help your family make confident decisions about your child’s smile, every step of the way.
